Structural Integration
and the Ten-Series
"How do we relate harmoniously with gravity? As soon as we’re vertical, then gravity isn’t pulling on us in any direction. As soon as we're not vertical, it's starts to pull down, and pull down, and pull down." - Heather Starsong, Rolfer® and Rolf Movement® Practitioner |

With repetitive use, the force of gravity, and ingrained habits, our muscles and tissues can suffer from compression. This compression of the body happens over time and can often be the reason behind chronic pain. Rolfing® Structural Integration seeks to unwind the body and reorganize the structures of the body through manipulation, education, and movement. It is a way of decompressing the body, which allows greater fluidity of movement and better alignment with gravity.
The main goals of Rolfing® SI are to help clients find more ease of movement in their lives and be more present in their bodies, thus improving their health span and promoting longevity. |
The part of the body that interests us, Rolfers®, is the fascia. Let’s imagine it as a large mesh. This large mesh envelops very important structures in the body: muscles, organs, bones, blood vessels, and nerves. Fascia maintains these structures in place and helps our body keep its shape and integrity. It also plays an important role when we move our bodies because it allows the structures of the body to move fluidly one against the other. Without fascia, we wouldn't be able to stretch or bend very much! Through injury or habit, our fascia can become constricted and compressed and we thus lose some flexibility and range of motion. Looking after our fascia is important because it is an integral component of our general well-being and health.
